Campbell’s Field Day At Century
Not only did driver Brandon Campbell collect five driving victories—including three from his barn—on the 11-race card at Century Downs Tuesday (Sept. 1), but he also swept the pair of $9,000 features.
Campbell, after winning in the opener with Hotpieceoface ($4.80), he steered Michael Campbell trainee Mrs Suhwiggins to a 1:53.1 victory in the Fillies and Mares Open Pace. The four-year-old Custard The Dragon mare sat pocket to stablemate Scardy Cat, who set a clip of :27.2, :56.1 and 1:24. Into the stretch Mrs Suhwiggins popped pocket and slid by Scardy Cat to win by a half length with Chocolate Terror third.
Owned by J J J Stables, Mrs Suhwiggins won her third race from 14 starts this season and her 12th from 38 overall, earning $237,914. She paid $6.90 to win.
Tiempo Hanover, trained by Brandon Campbell, also popped pocket but blew clear of his competition to win the Open Pace by open lengths in 1:52.
Retros Mystery led through quick early fractions of :26.4 and :55.4 before faltering into the backside as Campbell launched Tiempo Hanover from second to the front. The six-year-old Western Ideal gelding opened four lengths on the field to three-quarters in 1:23.1 and hit the finish six-and-a-half lengths clear of 9-5 favourite Crackle N Burn with Ima Dude closing for third.
Owned by Dana Shore, Peter Chanak and Jodi Loftus, Tiempo Hanover won his ninth race from 16 starts this season and his 12th from 108 overall, earning $135,635. He paid $6.40 to win.
Campbell’s remaining victories came late in the card. He steered his pupils Chase The Ace ($4.20) and Ima Momas Boy ($2.70) to victory in the penultimate races on the card.
