SC Rewind: All About Greenwood
This week's Rewind is yet another edition of Picture Parade. Robert Smith has gathered a number of pictures together from various time periods in history but all with a central theme. All of the old photos are related to people, activities and memories from the revered and beloved Greenwood Raceway and its predecessor Old Woodbine.
As always the routine is for readers to submit their best guesses on any or all of the "oldies". A few subtle clues have been included with some of the pictures as an added feature. Additionally, if you have something to add, please feel free to share your thoughts and memories.
1. How many drivers can you identify from this action shot as a field passes the stands in single file?
2. A group of six very well known gentlemen pause from their trackside dining at Greenwood to smile for the camera. Who are they?
3. Lots of work to be done on the backstretch. Can you put a name on this hard working caretaker?
4. We know the year and the occasion. Can you name the two people in the winner's circle?
5. Racing in the winter months on Saturday afternoon at Greenwood was always popular. Can you name the driver and if you're really sharp tell us who the horse is.
6. This fellow was first home a lot of times. Can you name the driver of the five horse and might as well identify the horse for good measure.
7. Nice work Dad! Who do we have here as a father and daughter combo in the winner's circle following a win at Old Woodbine in 1961?
8. Summer racing at Greenwood brought a lot of stars into town. Can you name this driver/trainer and maybe even his horse as they go through a training mile. This is not a funny picture but you might laugh when you find out who it is.
9. The background tells us its Old Woodbine. No. 5 is the winner. O.K., now see if you can name the driver. I've already given a clue.
10. The front page of a 1980 program. This horse and driver were real fan favorites for several seasons at Greenwood. Can you name the driver and the horse? I am banking on a lot of correct answers.
Can it be that forty years have come and gone?
Bonus Photo
If some of the other pictures baffled you see if you can figure out what was happening in the above photo. A few words should be sufficient.
Quote For The Week - Bobby Sleeth made his way from Kingston to California to race and ended up doing a lot of catch driving on the West Coast. When asked if it was a dangerous job he said "Hell yes; I darn near starved to death several times!"
Carryover
The above picture went unsolved in last week's Rewind. I will repeat the caption and also add a clue to assist in identifying this individual.
Can you identify this Canadian-born horseman who was accomplished enough to make the front cover of The Horseman & Fair World magazine in 1958? A couple of clues. He raced mainly in the U.S. after starting his career near his Southern Ontario birthplace and was among the early drivers to record sub-2:00 miles on American tracks. He was frequently used as a catch driver and often referred to by his popular nickname.
Further clues: His last name is a hockey term and his nickname is an insect.
Make sure to stay tuned during the upcoming week to get the correct answers. They will appear in the comments section.
Lots of answers with this
Lots of answers with this week's array of pictures. The correct answers were as follows:
#1 - Kojack leading the field for Chris Storms (in a Nassau sulky) followed by John Lester, Jerry Duford, Bruce Shea, Fred Goudreau and Doug Hie. Thanks as I received this picture with only the name of the leading horse.
#2 - Seated from left to right - Ted Armstrong, Elgin Armstrong and Joe O'Brien. Standing - Chas. Armstrong, Jack Kopas and Delvin Miller. I think this was taken the day Horton Hanover won the Can. Pacing Derby.
#3 - Heather O'Toole
#4 - Caretaker Debby Jeffries and trainer Wayne Hinnegan from Bob McIntosh stable. Horse was For Your Eyes Only driven by Ron Henderson
#5 - Ron Feagan driving Sharp N Smart (Thanks Mr. Glavin you were "sharp")
#6 - Keith Waples driving Blaze Pick. Not sure of the second horse
#7 - Driver is Jack Reid with his trotter Flash Riddell, joined by daughter Pat Reid
#8 - Die Laughing and Richie Silverman
#9 - Driver is Omar Knight, don't know the others in the photo but Don Booth was listed as owner of Della Dale
#10 - As identified by many, that was Banker Fretz handled by Garth Gordon. For once I was right when I said I was "banking" on a lot of correct answers.
Bonus Photo - All I was looking for was "Demolition of Greenwood backstretch
"Carryover" - That gentleman was correctly identified as Alix "Spider" Winger. Stay tuned for more about him in an upcoming Rewind.
A note to James Milne - Sorry for creating a problem at your house. I can kind of identify with your situation.
Thanks so much for joining in.

I'm gonna guess the bonus picture is the demolition on the caretakers laundry room or the maintenance garage. Definitely west end of the backstretch. Looks too far west to be the ship in barn #1.
My guess for the bonus
My guess for the bonus picture is Al Winger because of the hockey clue. I don't remember him as being from Ontario but I remember him as a good driver on the New York circuit and at Rockingham. Hope someone gets this one soon as my wife is upset about all the old horse books that I am dragging out!
