2020 Confederation Cup Cancelled

On Friday (July 31), officials with Flamboro Downs announced that the 2020 edition of the Confederation Cup has been cancelled.

The event for four-year-old pacers was scheduled to be contested in May, but Flamboro officials made the announcement in April that the race would be postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic and possibly rescheduled to the fall.

"Management at Flamboro Downs have made the difficult decision to cancel the 2020 running of the Confederation Cup, which was originally scheduled to be contested in May and then re-scheduled to September 2020," said the track's general manager Chad Gates in a statement. "This was a difficult decision for management, but we felt that under the current operating protocols we could not present such a prestigious event in the manner it deserves.

"We look forward to once again hosting the Confederation Cup in May 2021."

My favorite class of horses is older pacers. The following races scheduled for them in 2020 have all succumbed to Covid, and the list just keeps getting longer and longer:

The Confederation Cup
The Camluck Classic
The Battle of Lake Erie
The first Meadowlands leg of The Graduate
The Prix D' Ete
The Rooney
The Quillen
The Running Aces Dan Patch
The Gerrity
The Kane
The Commodore Barry
The Mohawk Leg of The Graduate
The Mohawk Gold Cup
The Franklin
The Ewart

The total purses of these races were over $2 million, U.S.
