Alagna Pupils Shine In Whenuwishuponastar
Trainer Tony Alagna sent the winners in both $20,000 divisions of the Whenuwishuponastar opening preliminary on Tuesday (July 28) at Woodbine Mohawk Park.
Notorious Pink scorched the track when winning the later division with a wire-to-wire 1:51.4 mile. The daughter of Captaintreacherous cleared command with pilot Bob McClure from post 8 and clipped fractions of :27.1, :56.2 and 1:24.3 before rolling away from Lillysilk giving chase in second. Charging to the finish with a :27.1 final quarter, Notorious Pink hit the wire five-and-three-quarter lengths separated from Lillysilk while Paulas Bet Hanover rallied at 100-1 to finish third.
Undefeated in two starts, Notorious Pink has collected $25,200 in earnings for owners Alagna Racing LLC, Steven Head, John Fodera and Riverview Racing LLC. She paid $7.50 to win.
Stablemate Lady Midnight popped to a 1:54.1 victory in the earlier division with Jody Jamieson at the lines.
Leading to a :27.1 first quarter, Lady Midnight yielded command as 6-5 favourite Alumni Seelster swept from fourth to the front before a :56.3 half. Alumni Seelster continued to lead as Ailey Hanover mounted a first-over bid approaching three-quarters in 1:26.2 and turned away that challenger in the stretch but had more competitors on her tail.
Indra Hanover kicked off cover and drew closer to the leader into the stretch while Lady Midnight waited for an opening. As Ailey Hanover faltered from between horses Lady Midnight had a gap to pop out and surge to the top late in the stretch, holding off Indra Hanover in second while Alumni Seelster settled for third.
Another filly by Captaintreacherous, Lady Midnight won in her career debut, banking $10,000 for owners Brittany Farms LLC and Marvin and Lynn Katz. She paid $8.10 to win.
