The ‘Housewife’ Vs. The ‘Countess’
Desperatehousewife, the 5-2 second choice, wore down tempo setter and 2-5 favourite Countess Stormont to win Saturday’s $15,000 Fillies & Mares Preferred
Trot at Georgian Downs.
Fresh off a pair of wins at the Preferred level, Countess Stormont (Jonathan Drury) fired off the gate from the outermost post six and settled on top in a :28-second first quarter. The ‘Countess’ led the way to half in :59.2 before facing her first challenge. Trainer/driver Todd Ratchford sent Desperatehousewife first-up from fifth and applied heavy pressure in an attempt to topple the reigning power as they rolled past the third quarter in 1:28.4. Stormont Countess succumbed to that pressure in the stretch leaving Desperatehousewife to battle River Road Tina (Steve Byron), who angled off her cover. Desperatehousewife reached the wire with three-quarters of a length to spare in 1:58.1.
River Road Tina and Whatever Lolawants (Scott Coulter) completed the triactor while Countess Stormont faded to fourth.
The winning daughter of Jonathan Lobell-Ms Pro is one victory away from having a $100,000 seven-year-old season. The win was her eighth of 2009 in 28 starts for owners Jean MacDonell of Nichols, New York,Wayne Corini of Rockville, Maryland and Scott Jaconetty of San Jose, California. Desperatehousewife now boasts 42 wins on her lifetime record with $339,534 in earnings.
