Cup Preppers Prevail At Mohawk Park
A pair of Pepsi North America Cup-sustained pacers prevailed in their Thursday evening assignments at Woodbine Mohawk Park, but their backers didn’t get rich.
Sent off as the 1-2 favourite in his $16,000 conditioned event, One For Julius quarter pole-moved to the lead and cruised to an easy victory in 1:51.4 for the tandem of driver Chris Christoforou and trainer Dustin Jones.
Bettor At Hightide sliced out the :26.3 opener, but One For Julius came blasting out of the three-hole and rolled to the top in the backstretch. The favourite sped through middle splits of :56 and 1:24.4 before using a :27-second kicker to win by 1-3/4 lengths over Going Fast in 1:51.4.
Andrea Lea Racingstables Inc of Lakefield Gore, QC bred and owns the three-year-old son of Hes Watching-Claireabell. It was the first win of the season – and the second to date – for the career winner of $91,035.
Tint Of Mint, who also went off at odds of 1-2 in his $15,000 affair, turned a two-hole trip into a maiden-breaking score for the duo of driver Louis Philippe Roy and conditioner Dan Lagace.
Roy hustled the three-year-old son of American Ideal-Mintjulep Bluechip to the early lead and served up the first fraction of :26.4 before relinquishing the top spot to Cold Creek Cabo. That foe wheeled the group through middle panels of :55.4 and 1:24.2, but he couldn’t seal the deal. Tint Of Mint popped off the rail in the lane and fired home in a :27-second clip to win by a length over Play Therapy in 1:51.4.
Tint Of Mint is now 1-for-9 in his career for Lagace and partners Billy Joe Timmins and Christopher Nicol. The $7,500 payday lifted his lifetime earnings to $20,070.
