Howlett Wins Five In Miami
Driver Don Howlett had the hot hands in Miami on Saturday (July 11), steering five winners on the 10-race card including the winners of the two featured events.
Howlett drove his pupil Wrangler Cash to a wire-to-wire victory in the $2,450 Open Pace. The seven-year-old gelding by As Promised led through fractions of :29.3, 1:00.2 and 1:31.1 before stopping the clock in 2:00.3, one-and-a-half lengths better than Senga Savannah. Race favourite Outlaw Kismet pulled pocket entering the stretch but faltered to third with broken equipment.
Owned by Wanda Howlett and Blair Kidd, Wrangler Cash won his first race from 10 starts this season and his 20th from 141 overall, earning $283,871. He paid $5.00 to win.
In the following race, Howlett piloted his four-year-old American Ideal mare Somewhere Ideal to a 2:05.4 victory in the $2,350 Fillies and Mares Open Handicap Pace.
Away last in the quintet, Somewhere Ideal sat off the speed as Witch Doctor paced early fractions of :30.1 and 1:01.2 while under pressure from Simply Awesome, who lost ground moving to three-quarters in 1:34.3. Witch Doctor maintained control into the stretch but could not hold off Somewhere Ideal, who rallied from three lengths behind to deliver as the favourite by a length. Dali Double, off a pocket trip, finished third.
Owned by Wanda Howlett and Dwayne Taylor, Somewhere Ideal won her second race from five starts this season and her seventh from 30 overall, earning $29,020. She paid $4.20 to win.
Howlett’s other victories came in the form of a natural hat trick earlier in the card. He drove So Beautiful ($2.10) to a wire-to-wire victory in a $1,700 maiden pace, followed with a pocket-popping score by Follow Your Nose ($5.30) and completed the hat trick by steering his trainee Fearsome ($4.30) to victory—giving Howlett three training wins on the day.
