Night Watchman Steps Up His Game
Trevor Henry mapped out a perfect, pocket trip for Night Watchman in his Monday evening assignment at Woodbine Mohawk Park, and the homebred didn’t let the trip go to waste.
In fact, Night Watchman popped from the pocket in the lane and drew clear of heavily-favoured Reagan Blue Chip en route to posting a new lifetime mark and a shocking upset.
Henry used the Craig Barss trainee’s quick turn of foot to make the front from Post 9. The colt sailed past the quarter pole in :26.3 before giving way to Reagan Blue Chip in the backstretch. Reagan Blue Chip proceeded to roll the field through middle panels of :55 and 1:24, but he couldn’t seal the deal.
Both colts dug in late, but it was Night Watchman using his :26.4 closing speed to win by 1-1/4 lengths over Reagan Blue Chip in 1:51.1. Aneto rallied late to grab the show dough in the $16,000 affair.
Sent off at odds of 29-1, Night Watchman posted his first win of the season – and the second of his career – for partners Nurko Sokolovic and Craig Barss. Sustained to the Pepsi North America Cup, Night Watchman pushed his earnings over $43,000 with the win.
