Moreau, Roy Sweep Georgian Preferreds
Trainer Richard Moreau and driver Louis-Philippe Roy teamed to land favourites Sicario and Legion Seelster in the winner’s circle of the $11,500 Preferred 2 Trot and Preferred 2 Pace respectively on Sunday (June 7) at Georgian Downs.
Sicario, sent the even-money choice, hustled for the lead from post 1. The five-year-old Holiday Road gelding owned a three-and-a-half length lead to a :29 opening quarter that diminished when Parkhill Nonstop applied a first-over challenge into a :58.4 half. However Parkhill Nonstop lost stride in the backstretch, leaving Sicario unchallenged to three-quarters in 1:27.3. He continued under minimal pressure through the stretch while Silverlode gave chase from the pocket to finish one length behind the winner in a 1:56.2 mile. Sizzlen Hot Herbie finished five lengths farther behind in third.
Owned by Pamela and John Hehn, Sicario won his third race from 10 starts this season and his 20th from 75 overall, earning $177,427. He paid $4.00 to win.
In the Preferred Pace, stablemate Legion Seelster—also leaving from post 1—had a narrow lead early until Toot Toot N stuck a head in front to a :27.2 first quarter. Legion Seelster promptly retook command from Toot Toot N, who sat second through a :56.2 half and to three-quarters in 1:24.3.
With the two-wide flow stalled since Born Of Fire failed to advance first over, Pretty Handsome swung three wide to contest for the lead into the final turn. Legion Seelster managed to hold that challenger at bay through the stretch to hit the finish one-and-a-quarter lengths in front in a 1:52.4 mile. Pretty Handsome settled for second with Jewels Dragon giving chase in third.
A four-year-old gelding by Sunshine Beach, Legion Seelster won his third race from nine starts this season and his 10th from 26 overall, earning $114,105. Gaston Bibeau and Ecurie CSL own the $3.10 winner.
