'Crown' Winner Surfaces At Hoosier
Harrah’s Hoosier Park has completed its first week of qualifying action following the shutdown due to COVID-19. The final set of qualifiers took place on Saturday, May 23, and saw the return of 2017 Breeders Crown winner Beckhams Z Tam.
In the fourth race of the day, Beckhams Z Tam tallied a win in 1:53.2. The horse had previously qualified in the only set of qualifiers at Harrah’s Hoosier Park prior to the shutdown in mid March.
After having started from Post 6 on Saturday, Ricky Macomber Jr. placed Beckhams Z Tam on the lead with an easy first quarter of :29.1 and kept the flow steady through to the half-mile call in :58.1. The speed began to increase during the second half of the race, as the six-year-old son of Always A Virgin rallied home in :26.2 for the win. The margin of victory was two and three-quarter lengths over Threeofthebest A and Trace Tetrick. Manhattan Beach and John DeLong finished third.
Owned by Z Tam Stables LLC, Beckhams Z Tam is heading into his fifth season of action with 17 wins from 61 career starts and earnings in excess of $804,000. He is trained by Jamie Macomber and took his career best time of 1:49 at four at Harrah’s Hoosier Park.
The 'Macomber Team' also connected later in the card with Rockie Got Framed, a four-year-old son of Rockin Image. The gelding stopped the clock in 1:53.4 and was a two and three-quarter-length winner over Big Sky Hanover and DeLong, while Dreamfair Mesa and Tetrick finished third.
Other Indiana-sired winners on the day included Skylar and Joey Putnam in 1:55.3, DGs Caviar and Andy Shetler in 1:56.4, and Gazing Star and LeWayne Miller in 1:53.3.
