UPDATED: ORC Releases 2010 Race Date Submissions

The Ontario Racing Commission (ORC) is circulating for public comment the applications for 2010 race date schedule changes received from Ontario Racetrack

Operators. Industry members are encouraged to review the applications and provide their comments to the ORC Administration by November 18, 2009.

Applications for schedule change were received for Flamboro Downs, Georgian Downs, Grand River, Kawartha, Sudbury Downs, Western Fair and Windsor Raceways. An appendix of these submissions, accompanied by the necessary business case to substantiate the changes, is attached.

Under the Quarter Horse Racing Industry Development Program, a request was made for an extension to the requirement for the submission of an application for 2010 race dates, to accommodate the ongoing discussions by the program group.

This is the feedback I sent to the ORC!

Two years ago Flamboro Downs requested a shortened race shedule in particularly the summer months.
The reason for the summer reduction was due to the fact that with increased competition of the smaller tracks, they had a difficult time filling the entry box.

Fast forward to 2010 Flam had attempted to slash the shedule at Flamboro Downs to 6 months and Georgian to 6 months which also included a significant reduction of race dates at both venues.Thankfully the ORC had put a moritoreum on race date reductions for the 2010 racing season, but didnt include beyond that to my knowledge.

So...Flamboro has applied for the same number of race dates as 2009 with changes.
1 change was to have no dates during the month of June and then add those dates to July and August bringing those months back to a 5 day a week callender which 2 years ago Flamboro claimed they couldnt fill the boxes during those months. And I believe that claim to be true nor is there any reason to believe they would have any less trouble filling those cards now. They will not be able to fill these cards.

What then...When they apply for the 2011 race dates they will almost certainly request less race dates..WHY???..Because of the difficulty they had filling cards for 2010.

The way Flam wants to construct the 2010 shedule is to have the perception of a shortage of horses and an over abundance of race dates!!!

This should not be allowed to happen.
