Zenyatta Makes Breeders Cup History

Undefeated in 14 starts, five-year-old mare Zenyatta made history when she out-sprinted her male counterparts in the $5 million Breeders Cup Classic Saturday afternoon at Santa Anita Park

.

Regal Ransom led for most of the 1-1/4 mile race while Zenyatta and jockey Mike Smith remained near the back of the pack. As the field of 12 headed into the stretch, Zenyatta ducked in between horses and then angled out six-wide. The talented mare unleashed her usual late stretch kick and came roaring home for the triumph in 2:00.62.

Gio Ponti (Ramon Dominguez) finished a length behind and Twice Over (Tom Queally) was third.

“There are tears coming to my eyes," said trainer John Shirreffs infront of cheering crowd of over 58,800. “I can't believe it. She is a great, great filly. She is all heart. The way the crowd took to her was just amazing. They cheered for her, they clapped for her, they love her. What a wonderful relationship."

May I ask why Standardbred Canada is covering this and other t-bred events? I tend to doubt your counterparts in the thoroughbred world are reporting standardbred events with the frequency you are. Is Standardbred Canada here to promote standardbreds or both breeds?
