Hooter Shooter Snags Rideau Preferred
With a first-over grind, Hooter Shooter pushed for the lead to take a narrow victory in the $8,600 Preferred Pace at Rideau Carleton Raceway on Sunday (March 15).
Saulsbrook Peach parked around the first turn before clearing early leader Windsun Cheyenne past a :27 first quarter. Driver Stephane Brosseau soon angled Hooter Shooter off the pegs and rolled uncovered towards Saulsbrook Peach into a :57.1 half. Past three-quarters in 1:25.4, Hooter Shooter drew to within a length of a lead rounding the final turn while Windsun Cheyenne waited for room from the pocket. As the pacesetter faltered into the stretch Hooter Shooter battled Windsun Cheyenne to the finish, landing a nose in front on the line in a 1:54.4 mile. Stonebridge Beach closed from second over for third.
A seven-year-old gelding by Badlands Hanover, Hooter Shooter won his 22nd race from 111 starts, earning $125,101. Trainer Marc Andre Simoneau owns the $12.50 winner.
The evening’s other feature, an $8,600 Preferred Trot, had no declared winner. Angels Kid broke stride and fell down heading past the quarter, leading to the stewards declaring the race a no contest. The $23,246 bet into the race was refunded.
