Taking command early, Jewels Dragon turned away all challengers to win the $8,500 Preferred 3 Pace at Flamboro Downs on Sunday (March 15) while giving trainer Jodie Cullen one of her three victories on the card.

Driver Ed Hensley hustled the four-year-old Custard The Dragon gelding to the top while pylon-starter Bit Of Luck settled for the pocket. Jewels Dragon carved fractions of :28, :58 and 1:26.2 on the lead while enduring a first-over charge from Outlawgrabbingears, which began at the half but faded nearing the final turn. Through the stretch Jewels Dragon separated from Bit Of Luck, his closest pursuer, to win by two-and-a-quarter lengths in 1:54. Levis Day finished four lengths farther back in third.

Owned by Paul Sanders, Jewels Dragon won his second race from eight starts this season and his 13th from 36 overall, earning $131,758. The $9.50 winner capped a three-win evening for trainer Jodie Cullen, with her other victories coming with Cheapskate Hanover ($2.10) and Dragon Time ($2.90).
