Ralph Kermode Passes

The harness racing industry was saddened today by the passing of Ralph Kermode, one of the industry’s genuine 'nice guys.'

Kermode, former Harness Racing New Zealand president, passed away peacefully this morning after a gallant battle with illness in recent times.

Harness Racing New Zealand Inc. chairman Pat O’Brien said, “it is a very sad day, as Ralph provided a great contribution to the industry in so many ways, but most importantly he was a great friend to everyone he met. Our thoughts and prayers go out to Judy and the Kermode family at this time, as we reflect on a true icon’s passing."

Kermode served on the committee and as president of the Manawatu HRC for a number of years. He was a member of the HRNZ executive from 1991 to 2000, the last three years as president. Kermode was also a long time member of the NZ Equine Research Foundation and many other industry working groups.

Many of the changes instituted under his direction significantly strengthened the industry and laid strong foundations for the future. Key highlights administratively were his involvement in reviewing industry funding policies, and restructuring HRNZ’s voting system and executive structures.

“Ralph was a true gentleman, always professional in his dealings to ensure the interests of harness racing in all regions and at all levels were considered," O’Brien said. “Ralph reflected what was good within the industry, recognizing the volunteer contribution and grassroots passion that the industry is based on. We are certainly the richer for the involvement of Ralph.”

Apart from his involvement as an administrator, Kermode was heavily involved as an industry participant -- breeding and racing both standardbreds and thoroughbreds. Ralph was fortunate to experience great success with champion mare Blossom Lady and her son Mister DG, along with a host of other winners in both racing codes. Wins or losses at all venues were always met however with the same cheerful disposition expected of a true sportsman.

Please join Standardbred Canada in offering condolences to the family and friends of Ralph Kermode
