Intoxicated Riders Cause Race Chaos

Todo Santos Cuchumatan, Guatemala’s traditional horse race, with roots dating back to the Spanish Conquest in the early 1500s, turned into a chaotic frenzy on Sunday after participants indulged in the consumption of alcohol

The historic Mayan race, which features dozens of riders charging back and forth along a 100 m length of road for up to seven hours, attracts hundreds of tourists and locals annually.

Despite the implementation of a drinking ban last year by mayor Modesto Mendez, the race was marred by multiple injuries due to excessive drinking.

According to Reuters, at least two Mayan riders fell off their horses during this year's race. One was carried away by bystanders after being trampled in the mud while another man walked away from the track with a bloody face.
