When it comes to handicapping and wagering on horse racing, ‘whales’ are relatively common and definitely play a significant role the industry. Some of these high-end bettors are well known, while others opt for cloaks of anonymity. If you’re in search of a good whale story, look no further than that of Bill Benter, who some may refer to as the ‘Moby Dick’ of the industry. Here’s his story.

In a recent video report, which appears above, Bloomberg.com explained the rise of Benter’s wagering empire.

“There’s a purity about what he did,” Bloomberg reporter Kit Chellel says in the video, by Tom Gibson. “He was faced with a technical, numerical challenge. His job was to beat the odds in horse racing, and the way he did it was by applying science to this problem in a way that most people don’t…. He’s still working away at that problem.”
