Fraser Downs offered up an 11-race live card on Sunday afternoon (Jan. 12), and a scratch-reduced field of four faced the starter for the program’s feature, the $10,800 Open Pace.

After having been sent off as the wagering public’s even-money second choice, the Kelly Hoerdt-trained, driven and co-owned Iwontdothatagain ($5.10) left from Post 3 and went on to record a wire-to-wire win in 1:57.3.

Hoerdt had the nine-year-old son of Stonebridge Regal on his toes and left out hard for the point over the ‘good’ track, which was applied a two-second variant in speed. The duo parked to the lead through an opening quarter of 29 seconds before settling down on the engine.

Once Hoerdt and his gelding assumed command, it proved to be ‘game over’ for their foes. The duo cut the opening half in :59, spun off three quarters in 1:29, and came home with a :28.3 final panel. The one-length victory was clocked in 1:57.3.

Boiling Oar, the public’s choice that was driven by Nathan Sobey, had gotten away last before racing second-over. Boiling Oar came on late, but was just short at the wire and had to settle for second. The Scott Knight-driven Peace Out Posse, who had led the first-up charge, finished third, one and a quarter lengths behind the victor.

The win marked the first victory of Iwontdothatagain’s 2020 campaign. Hoerdt, of Beaumont, owns the bay with fellow Alberta resident Ed Keryliuk (Edmonton).
