Shanghai Phil On The Move
It has been revealed that pacing stallion Shanghai Phil will be relocating to one of harness racing’s hotbeds to service mares for the 2020 breeding season.
It was recently reported that Shanghai Phil has been acquired by Robin Burke of Brackley, PEI and will be standing on the island for the upcoming season.
Shanghai Phil (p,8,1:50.2s [$636,022]) raced as a two-year-old in 2004 and finished a close third to Rocknroll Hanover in the $1.2-million Metro Stakes at Woodbine Racetrack. He notched freshman Grand Circuit wins in the Champlain, Bluegrass and International Stallion Stakes that year and also captured his Breeders Crown elimination.
In 2005, Shanghai Phil was retired after a short three-year-old season, although, after years passed, he returned to the races in 2010 for a 23-race campaign in Ontario at the age of eight.
Shanghai Phil ultimately made his way to the breeding shed, where he has since produced 23 winners of over $100,000 in purses, 11 winners of over $250,000 in earnings, and two winners of more than $500,000. In terms of speed, 37 of his progeny have won in 1:55 or faster, 19 in 1:53 or faster, and four in 1:50 or faster.
Some of Shanghai Phil’s most notable offspring include Duc Dorleans ($709,944, 1:48.4s), Cadillac Phil ($396,780, 1:49f), Phil Your Boots ($383,516, 1:49.1) and Champagne Phil ($579,191, 1:49.4).
