Lady Caterina Comes Out On Top
Off a pocket ride Lady Caterina soared to command and held her ground through the stretch to take the $8,500 Preferred 3 Trot at The Raceway at Western Fair District on Tuesday, Nov. 19.
The seven-year-old Holiday Road mare drafted pacesetter and 3-2 favourite Sicario through splits of :28, :58.1 and 1:28.2. On The Sly meanwhile recouped ground the mile, catching cover from seventh by the half but then spinning into a closing gear towards the final turn. Lady Caterina kicked off the pegs turning into the lane and put away Sicario while drifting to the center of course with On The Sly surging late. The Alan Fair trainee hit the finish two lengths better than On The Sly in a 2:00 mile with Sicario settling for third.
Owned by Elizabeth Fair, Lady Caterina won her eighth race from 24 starts this season and her 23rd from 139 overall, earning $227,160. Tyler Moore steered the $7.50 winner.
Sodwana Bay strolled from post 7 to a wire-to-wire score in the $8,500 Fillies and Mares Preferred 3 Pace.
Driver Nick Steward sent the six-year-old No Pan Intended mare for the top, clearing odds-on favourite Casino Classic moving to a :29.1 first quarter. Phoos Girl angled first over from fourth nearing a :59.3 half but only progressed slightly heading to three-quarters, timed in 1:28.3. Sodwana Bay raced continued on a loose lead into the lane, cruising across the finish two-and-three-quarter lengths ahead of Sporty Tori closing for second in a 1:58 mile. Casino Classic held third.
Trained by Vic Puddy for owners Wayne Mac Rae and Howmac Farms Ltd., Sodwana Bay won her 13th race from 21 starts this season and her 35th from 101 overall, earning $204,044. She paid $10.60 to win.
