Susies Lady Poised For Autumn Sweep
Two divisions of the Ontario Sired Autumn Series went postward Saturday evening at a frosty Flamboro Downs, and for the second straight week Susies Lady went home a winner.
After a 2:02.4 triumph in last week’s opening-leg assignment, Susies Lady stepped up her speed and ripped off a 2:00.3 triumph in her round two assignment.
Scott Coulter got away second with the Susie Kerwood trainee, who stalked Eternal Jewel through first-half fractions of :29.4 and 1:00.3. Eternal Jewel was still the leader at the three-quarter pole in 1:31, but Susies Lady was first-over and at the bridle of that leader. Susies Lady then used a :29.3 closing quarter for driver Colin Kelly en route to posting the win by 1-3/4 lengths over Eternal Jewel. Heid took home third prize.
Sent off as the 1-9 favourite, Susies Lady improved her rookie record to 3-1-3 from nine attempts with the win. Her share of the $8,500 purse bumped her bankroll to $30,810. She is owned by Kerwood and M And L Of Delaware LLC.
Golden Gavel miscued in the opening leg of the series and finished up the track, but she was on her best behaviour in round two.
The John Bax trainee was hustled to the lead in her division by driver Steve Byron, and the pair never looked back. Byron whacked out panels of :29.4, 1:00.4 and 1:32 before storming home in :29.4 to win by three lengths over Validation in 2:01.4. Gard Louiggi was third.
The two-year-old daughter of Archangel-Gaelic Mistress won for the first time in 13 tries for the partnership of Bax Stable, The Cavalier Stable, John Houston and Ken Bax.
