'Union Man’ Upsets In Feature
The betting public was all over Lively Freddie in Saturday’s $1,500 feature race at Exhibition Park Raceway, but Union Man Hanover used off-the-pace tactics to rain on that foe’s parade.
Sent off at just under 8-1 in the wagering, Union Man Hanover got away in mid-pack for driver John Davidson while heavily favoured Lively Freddie carved out first-half fractions of :29.3 and :59.3. Bugger Max brushed to the front at the three-quarter pole in 1:31, but hot on his heels was Union Man Hanover. The latter used a :29.1 closing quarter to prevail by 1-3/4 lengths over Bugger Max in 2:00.3. Taking home third prize was City Of The Year.
Owner/trainer Robert MacNeil of Saint John, NB watched the 10-year-old son of Artiscape-Up Front Rose improved this year’s record to 9-3-1 from 24 starts with the win. The 48-time winner has now banked just over $440,000 in his career.
