Driver Injured In Racing Accident
An on-track accident that occurred on Tuesday, October 22 has left one driver with injuries that will keep him out of action for the foreseeable future.
Veteran reinsman Mike Merton was in the sulky behind the odds-on Iwillmakeyousaywow in Race 6 at Monticello Raceway when the gelding made a nasty break off the start.
As a result of the break, Merton was dumped out of the race bike and sustained a broken clavicle (collar bone), according to track officials.
Merton has driven his charges to 3,655 wins over the course of his career and has also steered his drives to $13.4-million in purse earnings.
Please join Standardbred Canada in wishing Merton a speedy and complete recovery from his injuries.
Also, two races prior to the accident, a rare sight occurred when three 14-year-old Standardbreds finished first, second and third. Elias Joy recorded the win in Race 4 for Hunter Oakes, while the Merton-driven My Cool Breeze finished second and Crypto Man (Bruce Aldrich Jr.) was third under the wire.
