Rare Feat For Fourteen-Year-Old Horses
The old-timers got their moment in the sun at Freehold Raceway on Saturday (October 12), as 14-year-olds won both legs of the late daily double.
Camwiser, owned and trained by Vincent Valente, opened up a clear lead heading up the backstretch the final time, and had enough energy to hold on for the victory in race 11. The 9-1 shot was driven to victory by Jack Baggitt Jr, for his 55th lifetime win in 376 starts. Saturday's victory pushed Camwiser's career earnings to more than $218,000.
Not to be outdone, Steve Smith's Bobjacks Angle A prevailed in race 12. He made a first-over move at the half-mile point, kept on coming up the backstretch the final time, and wore down early pace-setter Bud Bay for the win. The Karen Garland-trained gelding has now won 31 times in 274 races, while earning more than $275,000.
The $2 double combining the war horses paid $23.80.
Live harness racing resumes on Friday at Freehold, with a first post time of 12:30 p.m.
