Campbell Doubles Up In Northside Stakes
Two-year-old pacing fillies were the stars of the show Saturday afternoon at Northside Downs, as the half-mile oval rolled out the red carpet for the Atlantic Sires Stakes program.
Streakazana took home top prize in the first of two $10,040 ‘A’ divisions for trainer/driver Mark Campbell.
The daughter of Western Paradise-Stonebridge Madona got away sixth from her second-tier starting spot, and that left the front end to battling tandem of Saulsbrook Ocean and the parked out Tobins Choice. Saulsbrook Ocean led through fractions of :29, :59.3 and 1:29 before late pressure got to her.
Streakazana picked up cover going to the half and then made a three-wide move on the way to the three-quarter pole. She then kicked home in :30.3 to win by a nose over heavily favoured Saulsbrook Ocean in 2:00. Woodmere Harriet rounded out the top three finishers.
Sent off at odds of 5-1, Streakazana won for the first time in seven attempts for owner MCR Streakazana Group of Charlottetown, PE. Purchased for $10,000 from last year’s Atlantic Classic Yearling Sale, the filly has banked $8,903 in her freshman year.
Ezra Express gave trainer/driver Marc Campbell a sweep of the ‘A’ divisions thanks to her 2:00.2 victory in the $10,040 second division.
Campbell hustled his charge right to the lead from Post 3, and together they whacked out fractions of :29, :59.2 and 1:29.4. A :30.3 final frame propelled her to the win by 3-1/2 lengths over Chelski. Elm Grove Ocean rounded out the Trifecta ticket.
Danica Ellis of Brookfield, NS bred owns the daughter of Ameripan Gigolo-Expressly Hanover. It was her second victory from seven assignments, and the lion’s share of the purse lifted her earnings to $14,951.
Rollwithitjessie hauled home the hardware in the $2,500 ‘B’ division for the tandem of driver Marc Campbell and trainer Myles Heffernan, Jr.
The daughter of Rollwithitharry-Mylittlerebel got off to a slow start, but her closing kick was enough to earn her the 2:02.3 triumph.
Anna With An E laid down fractions of :28.3, :59.1 and 1:30.4 while Rollwithitjessie raced in the back half of the group for the majority of the mile. She made a three-wide charge at the leaders at the three-quarter pole and then used a :31-second final frame to win by three-quarters of a length over La Vie En Rose in 2:02.3. Anne With An E faded late and settled for third prize.
Austin Sorrie of Montague, PE owns the youngster who now owns a 1-1-0 record from her first two attempts. The $3,600 purchase from last year’s Atlantic Classic Yearling Sale has banked $2,665 to date.
