Barrieau Doubles In Atlantic Stakes

Red Dirt Boomer ($6.20) and A Grand Terror ($32.30) rode pocket trips en route to victory in their respective $12,200 Atlantic Sires Stakes events for three-year-old pacing colts and geldings on Monday afternoon (Aug. 12) at Red Shores Racetrack and Casino at Charlottetown Driving Park, giving trainer-driver Gilles Barrieau a sweep of the co-featured events.

In the first division (race six), Red Dirt Boomer secured the pocket behind even-money favourite Purple Poet (Kenny Arsenault) through a :28.1 quarter before drafting behind middle splits of :57.4 and 1:27 prompted by the first-over Red Dirt Rocknroll (David Dowling). The son of Malicious pounced from the pocket after turning for home, sprinting off to beat the second-over Howmac Magic (Marc Campbell) by a length in 1:56.4. Red Dirt Rocknroll held third.

Red Dirt Boomer earned his 10th career win and his third of the season for owner Daniel Ross.

Barrieau used almost identical tactics in the second division (race eight), securing the pocket from the pole with A Grand Terror, drafting behind 6-5 choice Notorious (Campbell) through sectionals of :28.1, :58.1 and 1:28.1, and emerging off the home turn to prevail by a length in 1:58.3. Notorious held second, while Dont Be A Hero (Phil Hudon) rallied off third-over cover to take third.

Wayne MacRae, Robert Tilly and Gary Mott share ownership in A Grand Terror, a four-time winner by Camystic.
