SC Rewind: Picture Parade
This week's Rewind is a repeat edition of the somewhat popular Picture Parade format. Robert Smith has chosen a wide range of "new" old photographs to test the reading audience at their recognition skills. The same rules apply as stated in previous columns.
Rules & Regulations: You need only identify those you recognize (no need to say "no idea" etc.) and submit your answer along with the corresponding picture number. You can guess as many or as few as you like. If you see something that sparks a memory please feel free to add your comments.
P.S. - You can enter more than once for NO additional charge.
1 - Can you identify the location of this old racetrack? The background might help.
2 - The driver in this photo won quite a few races and was very well known back in the day. Can you put a name on him?
3 - The gentleman pictured above is without a hat in this pose but during his lengthy career in harness racing he wore a lot of different chapeaus. Can you correctly identify him?
4 - Can you identify this once well-known horseman who is pictured here in a warmup mile? The soft hat tells that this photo was probably from the early 1950's.
5 - Can anyone put names on these two fellows as they attend to their horse. This photo came to me many years ago with one person's name and also the name of the horse. Can you assist in further identifying the subjects?
6 - This scene has been all too familiar in recent years as grandstands fall victim to the wrecker's ball. Can you name the track where this demolition was taking place?
7 -The winner's circle is usually a pretty happy gathering spot. How many people can you identify in this photo taken quite a number of years ago? (Abahazy photo collection)
8 - This is a pretty good group assembled for a photo. This one shouldn't pose too much of a problem as a number of these guys have been in other picture parades if I remember correctly.
9 - A pair of very well-known trotting mares are shown finishing a mile in this 1964 photo. Can you name the drivers of the leader (#2) and second place finisher (#5) on the inside? Chances are if you recognize the drivers you will be able to name the horses as well. One small clue: both drivers are still with us. (Harness Horse Photo)
10 - State Fairs in the U.S. have been the scene of a lot of memorable race days witnessed by very large crowds. Many such fairs played host to futurities and other colt races which usually carried fairly generous purses. Can you name the location of the State Fair captured in this great old photograph? Oh, by the way, the State name will do.
11 - Can you identify the once very popular announcer in the above photo taken at a Chicago track many many years ago?
Who Was It?
Since this week's Rewind was all about picture identification I will pose a trivia question without a picture instead.
Way back in the early 1960's a full brother and sister combo won both Invitations on the same card at Buffalo Raceway. One was the Invitational Pace, the other the Invitational Trot. While this happening may not be unique, it is quite rare. Of course same sire, same dam, ALL CANADIAN. Oddly the trotting mare recorded a faster time than her pacing brother. Can you name them both?
Stay tuned for the correct answers during the upcoming week.

Trivia Question - Correctly answered by Mary Jane Findlay. In May of 1962 trotter Peaches Atom (John Findley) and pacer Baron Atom (Ben Webster) each won an Invitational on the same card at Buffalo Raceway. Thanks to James Milne for mentioning Betsy Herbert and Dean Herbert; it is possible they too did the same??

For the trivia I think it is
For the trivia I think it is Betsy Herbert on the trot and Dean Herbert on the pace as they both raced in OJC invitations when I started going to the track in 1965. Herbert Stables also had a double gaited performer named Replica Herbert who was fast but erratic and I think he came along later.

John Findley is still in
John Findley is still in rehab so I will give the answer to your trivia question.
Peaches Atom and her full brother Baron(?) Atom. When John got her to train she was on the Steward's list at Connaught Park and the next year she was season's fastest trotting mare. He had the trio of mares, Peaches Atom, Dalyce Blue and Cathy Diggles all Canadian bred,
Best wishes to all from Mary Jane & John.
