Two-year-old pacing colts and geldings were in the spotlight Thursday evening at Summerside Raceway, as the half-mile oval hosted five divisions of the Atlantic Sires Stakes – a trio of ‘A’ divisions and a set of ‘B’ divisions.
The first $9,080 ‘A’ division went to Tobins Rebel and trainer/driver Gilles Barrieau a sharp clocking of 1:59.2.
The son of Camystic-Eggs Panedict took over the lead at the quarter in :30 and from there he wheeled the field through panels of 1:00.1 and 1:30.4. He stormed home in :28.3 to win by 7-1/2 lengths over Elm Grove Onthego. Third prize was earned by Fern Hill Encore.
Sent off as the 1-5 favourite, the gelding won at first asking for owner Daniel Ross of Belfast, PE. The youngster was a $16,000 purchase from last year’s Atlantic Classic Yearling Sale.
Red Dirt Fulohart went gate-to-wire in the second division – worth $9,080 – for driver David Dowling and trainer Leonard Myers.
The son of Articulator-Oduya Western rolled through fractions of :31, 1:03 and 1:33 before finishing them off with a :29.3 closing panel. He drew clear to win by 2-1/4 lengths over Mall Cop in 2:02.3. Krispy Krunch rounded out the Trifecta ticket.
Jack Quinn and Leonard Myers share ownership on the gelding who was a $15,000 purchase from last year’s Atlantic Classic Yearling Sale.
Woodmere Rollhario broke his maiden in the third division in what was his third lifetime start for trainer Kevin MacLean.
The son of Rollwithitharry-Oh Pretty Leigh and driver Marc Campbell were on top every step of the way through panels of :32, 1:04 and 1:33.1. The pacer stepped home in :29 to win by a half-length margin over Woodmere Rollnpop in a time of 2:02.1. The show dough was earned by J J Austin.
Sent off as the 1-5 favourite, the gelding improved his rookie record to 1-2-0 from three assignments for owner Reg MacPherson of Stratford, PE. The $12,000 purchase from last year’s Atlantic Classic Yearling Sale has banked just shy of $5,000 to date.
