Fast Freshmen In Mohawk Qualifiers
A trio of juvenile pacers either met or beat the 1:55 mark in Friday's (June 28) 12-race qualifying session at Woodbine Mohawk Park, dedicated entirely to two-year-old colts and geldings.
Mayhem Hanover, one of two winners teamed by driver Doug McNair and trainer Gregg McNair, used a :27.4 closing quarter to trounce One For Julius by 7-3/4 lengths in 1:54.3, jointly the fastest mile of the session. Scott and Clay Horner own the promising son of Sportswriter and Musicale Hanover.
The Ratchford Stable of Nova Scotia's Denali Seelster equalled that mark, brushing from third on the far turn on his way to a three-length 1:54.3 score over McNair trainee Colima. Sylvain Filion drove the Sunshine Beach-Demi Seelster colt to cap a morning training double for Dr. Ian Moore.
After breaking in stride in his debut outing last week, Shelton Seelster posted a 1:55 qualifying win in rein to Jody Jamieson, edging away by 3-1/2 lengths through a sizzling :26.4 final split. Trainer Dave Menary's Menary Racing Inc. shares ownership of the Hes Watching-Shadow Of Mymind colt with Kenneth Ewen and Bruce Norris.
On the trotting side, Sebastian Ray took top honours by way of a 2:00.1 pillar-to-post effort after a commanding 6-3/4 length score in 2:01.2 just a week ago. Mario Baillargeon was aboard the son of Sebastian K S and Baby Bella for 1187422 Ontario Inc. and trainer Anthony MacDonald.
