Prince Giovanni Upsets Rideau Preferred
Sent at odds of 12-1, Prince Giovanni pulled pocket around the final turn and strode to a 1:53 victory in the $8,100 Preferred Pace on Sunday, June 16 at Rideau Carleton Raceway.
The Roadies set the tempo with Prince Giovanni tracking in the pocket through fractions of :28 and :57. 8-5 favourite Musselsfrmbrussels angled first over heading to the half but failed to advance moving through the backstretch, leaving room for Prince Giovanni to angle from the pylons passing three-quarters in 1:24.4. Prince Giovanni narrowed on The Roadies moving into the stretch and slid to a length-and-a-quarter victory. Cams Lucky Sam, gaining ground at the pylons, took second while The Roadies faded to third.
Paying $26.30 to win, Prince Giovanni races for Jacques Beaudoin, Maurice Houle, Andre Beaudoin and Ronald Charette. The six-year-old Big Bad John gelding won his sixth race from 19 starts this season and his 15th from 122 overall, earning $177,568. Jacques Beaudoin sat in the bike for trainer Johanne Begin.
Flying Isa N led most of the mile when winning again in the $8,100 Preferred Trot. Driver Stephane Brosseau sent the 2-5 favourite to the lead past a :28 opening quarter and continued to lead through a :57 half and past three-quarters in 1:25.3. Neon Lights edged first over from third through the backstretch and gradually gained ground on the leader through the stretch, hitting the finish a head behind the winner in a 1:54.1 mile. Lmc Mass Gem, sitting the pocket, finished third.
An 11-year-old gelding by Pegasus Spur, Flying Isa N won his seventh race from 22 starts this season and his 44th from 159 overall, earning $582,654. Yves Tessier conditions the $2.90 winner for owner Francois Morin.
