Ginger Beer Springs Century Upset
After being pinned in traffic for the middle stages of the mile, Ginger Beer ($35.80) found a path out of traffic in mid-stretch to collar favourite Lookslikewemadeit in the Wednesday night (June 5) feature at Century Downs, a $7,000 upper-level conditioned distaff pace.
Trainer-driver Keith Clark put the four-year-old Vertical Horizon mare in play early, leaving from post six to land in third while Lookslikewemadeit (Mike Hennessy) established the point through early splits of :28.1 and :57.1. With nine-sixteenths to go, Savemedasportspage (James Jungquist) commenced her first-over bid, forcing a :29 third split and locking Ginger Beer in until the top of the stretch.
With a furlong to go, Ucia Hanover (Brandon Campbell) pulled the pocket but failed to respond, so Ginger Beer was able to close a gap at the inside before switching off the pegs and surging to the fore in the final yards of a 1:56.2 mile. She finished a half length better than Lookslikewemadeit, while Big Bad Goldie (Jamie Gray) circled stalled cover to take third.
Clark co-owns six-time winner Ginger Beer with John Hind and Doris McDougall.
