Euchred Upsets Charlottetown Preferred
Sent at 9-1, Euchred toppled 1-5 favourite Mick Dundee to take the $2,900 Preferred 2 Pace at Charlottetown Driving Park on Saturday, May 18.
Trainer-driver David Dowling dashed Euchred to the lead from post three and posted splits of :28.1 and :57.4 with Adkins Hanover in the pocket. Doctor Royal, sitting third, edged first over heading to a 1:27.3 third quarter and pressured Euchred moving to the top of the stretch before backing through the field. Euchred opened a two-and-a-quarter-length lead on Adkins Hanover in progress to a 1:57.1 win while Revenant slid through the inside for third and Mick Dundee, caught behind bad cover, settled for fourth.
Paying $20.00 to win, Euchred won his 45th race from 136 starts, earning $110,924. He races for owner Kayla Habicht Walker.
Earlier on the card Sodwana Bay strolled in her seasonal debut to take the $2,800 Fillies and Mares Open as the 1-5 favourite in 1:57.2. The six-year-old No Pan Intended mare swept to the front from post four and withstood no pressure through fractions of :29.4, :58.4 and 1:28.3. The $2.30 winner hit the wire two lengths better than pocket-sitter Innocent Kiss while Nomatterwhen took third. Gilles Barrieau trains and drives the winner of 23 races and $164,044 for owners Wayne Mac Rae and Howmac Farms Ltd.
