SC Rewind: Picture Parade

SC-Rewind-Picture-Parade-May11-370px.jpg

This week's Rewind is another version of Picture Parade which seems to have been a popular item in the past.

This week's edition of 'Rewind' is all about old pictures, similar to other columns by the same name. Robert Smith has assembled a variety of pictures from various sources and time periods and asks the reading audience to try their luck at identifying them. Even if you don't care to participate as a "guesser" it is hoped that everyone will enjoy browsing through the old album.

Rules & Regulations: You need only identify those you recognize (no need to say "no idea" etc.) and submit your answer along with the corresponding picture number. You can guess as many or as few as you like. If you see something that sparks a memory please feel free to add your comments.

P.S. - You can enter more than once for NO additional charge.

1 - Can you correctly identify the winning driver in this Greenwood photo from about 30 years ago? What about the second horse's driver too if you want to do two for the price of one!?

2 - A picture from over 60 years ago at Buffalo. Name the driver if you can.

3 - This fellow spent a lot of time right where he is in this picture: the winner's circle. Can you put a name on him? Take a guess at the horse too if you wish.

4 - Can you identify this young lad? His father was a horseman too which really isn't too much of a clue.

5 - Here is a tough one. Can you identify this Ontario track? It did NOT ever host harness racing to my knowledge but it was still around in the 1950's when this picture was taken. As you can see a field of runners are parading in front of the stands. Clue - NOT located in Toronto.

6 - This U.S. based driver was at one time a very big time race winner. Can you put a correct name on him?

7 - If you're familiar with the people from a certain area you might recognize this older gentleman as he works at his trade. Can you correctly identify him?

8 - Can you identify this once popular harness driver; picture is from about 45 years ago.

9 - A very good old photo of a trio of once famous drivers. Can you name them, maybe at least one will ring a bell?

10 - Can anyone identify the location of this track? Maybe the background can help.

11 - Do you recognize this well-known racing figure from days gone by? Any guesses as to what track he is overlooking?

12 - Can you correctly this gentleman, usually pictured with a horse, displaying one of his favourite shorthorn heifers?

Sunday Is A Very Special Day

I will repeat a little piece I used in a Rewind a few years ago. I am always struck by those witty and thoughtful sayings displayed on marquis signs. I recently saw one that really caught my fancy and it goes this way: "No gift you can give your mother will ever equal the one she gave to you.” We all owe much to our mothers and should honour them each and every day but in a special way this Sunday.

Happy Mother's Day To All You Wonderful Mothers!

Comments

Without any doubt, it is not Yvon Pelchat but Yvan Gamache. I know both of them very well. The horse is the correct name.

In reply to by Pierre Grise

My apologies. I stand corrected as the pictured gentleman is indeed, Yvan Gamache. Where would we be without you Pierre? Thank you for your input.

Here are the "Official" results for this week's Picture Parade. Looks like some were pretty puzzling. Thanks to everyone that submitted an answer.
From the top down:

1 - John Holmes the winner followed by Doug Brown at Greenwood
2 - Joe Hodgins 1956 at Buffalo
3 - Johnny Chapman and Governor Skipper
4 - Tom Scrannage son of Bob Scrannage at Barrie Raceway with 14 year old horse Royalistic in 1976
5 - Track is Stamford Park near Niagara Falls
6 - Eddie Davis, well-known U.S. driver
7 - Edgar Amos harness maker in the Maritimes
8 - Yvan Gamache at Blue Bonnets reportedly with Knighthood
9 - Hugh Bell, Robert Walker (of Galophone fame) and Earle Avery
10 - Sackville Downs - Sackville, Nova Scotia
11 - O.J.C. Executive Jack Kenny in the stands at the Fort Erie Track. He was long associated with Canadian horse racing and died in 2015
12 - Hon. Earl Rowe at his farm in Newton Robinson, Ont.

THANKS to everyone that submitted an answer. It is pleasing to see new commenters nearly every week.

Just a note for #3 Governor Skipper was owned by Bill Wirtz owner of the Chicago Blackhawks.

The name of horse that is in the picture with the person already identified by Pierre Grise as Yvan Gamache is Knighthood if my memory recalls correctly.

hmmm, My "guess' for # 6 is Stu Firlotte - old friend and partner in time to my late husband, Lloyd Smith

No. 1 is John Holmes winning the race. John Holmes was the driver of Glorys Comet who made over two million $. Finishing second is Hall Of Fame driver Doug Brown. No. 2 is Canadian Joe Hodgins from the London area no relation to Hall of fame driver Clint Hodgins. No. 3 is John Chapman with Governor Skipper. No. 4 no idea. No. 5 I am going to say is Long Branch in Toronto. No. 6&7 don’t know. No. 8 is Gilles Gendron. No. 9 is Hugh Bell on left as you look at the picture. On the right is Canadian Hall of fame driver Earl Avery the trainer driver of Meadow Skipper. And in the middle I am only going to guess and say Jimmy Jordon. No. 10 no idea. No. 11 is Jack Kenney over looking Woodbine. He was president of the O.J.C. Standardbred division in the 80s. No. 11 is for sure the Honourable Earl Rowe. And to Gord Brown if I get all of my answers correct I should get about 60 percent. That was the percent I used to get when I went to school which wasn’t for very long.

Nobody will get all these, Robert. #1 looks like Kelly Sheppard with Doug Brown. #3 John Chapman and Governor Skipper. #6 Eddie Davis. #9 Hugh Bell on the left, Earl Avery on the right. #11 John Kenney at New Woodbine.

Todd Haight of Batavia Downs sent the following note:
Pic #2 looks like the one and only Joe Joe Hodgins and #3 is Johnny Chapman, perhaps with Gov. Skipper?
Love the Rewind, My Best.
Todd Haight

I will take a wild guess at number 2 - Joe Hodgins. Another wild guess for number 5-Devonshire Racetrack, Windsor.

No.3 John Chapman

No.7 Mie Macdonald

No.7 Yvan Gamache

No.10 Hippodrome de Quebec

No.1 driver in second place... Doug Brown No. 3.. John Chapman and Governor Skipper No.9 Driver on the right... Earl Avery No. 10... Sackville Downs As always thanks for keeping the history of the sport alive with your interesting write ups and pictures.

Great photos! I only have two guesses;

#10 Sackville Downs in Halifax.
