Pauly Wally Topples Preferred Foes
Parked every step of the mile, a determined Pauly Wally conquered his Preferred 2 rivals on Monday (May 6) at The Raceway at the Western Fair District.
Driver Marc St. Louis watched on as Artistic Pick (Colin Kelly) and Red John (Nick Steward) tussled for the early lead in the $12,700 Preferred 2 Handicap, with Red John clearing past the :28 opening quarter. Pauly Wally patiently stalked the pacesetter through middle panels of :57.4 and 1:26.3 before pulling even in the stretch and powering past late for the half-length score in 1:55.4. Artistic Pick angled through for second with Red John staying for third.
A six-year-old gelded son of Shadow Play - Armbro Brio, Pauly Wally is trained by Dean Nixon for owners Tony Basile of Toronto, Ont. and Andrew Atlas of Whitby, Ont. The win was the fourth of the season and 20th lifetime for Pauly Wally, whose career bankroll now sits just shy of $150,000.
The Joy Luck Club showed her class in the $11,600 Fillies & Mares Preferred 2 & 3 handicap with an authoritative gate-to-wire victory in 1:55.1. Driver Mike Horner engineered the win for trainer Mark Horner, who co-owns the five-year-old daughter of Camluck - Oh The Joy with R A W Equine Inc. of Burlington and Gregg McNair of Guelph, Ont.
In 65 starts, The Joy Luck Club boasts 21 wins and more than $443,000 in earnings.
