Preferred Repeat For P L Jill
P L Jill went to the front and didn’t look back en route to a facile score in Monday’s $34,000 Preferred Trot at Woodbine Mohawk Park.
It was the second straight triumph in the track’s top class for square gaiters, and the 1:53.2 clocking matched the nation’s quickest trotting mile of the season – a record first established last month by Free Willy Hanover.
P L Jill, who is best known for her closing skills, proved she’s no one-trick pony by marching to the front for driver Sylvain Filion in Monday’s assignment and successfully carving out panels of :27.4, :57 and 1:25.4 before kicking home in :27.3 to win by 1-1/2 lengths over the hard-closing St James Gate. Musical Rhythm, a stablemate to the winner, tagged along to finish third.
Bet down to be the 6-5 favourite in the seven-horse affair, P L Jill extended her winning streak to two for trainer Ben Baillargeon. The six-year-old daughter of Kadabra-Fridays Gem now boasts a 5-1-0 record from nine attempts this season. The 20-time winner, who is a homebred owned by Prince Lee Acres, Jill Coleman and Alan Christensen, surpassed $300,000 in career earnings with the win.
