Kowalski On My Red High Heels
My Red High Heels will take her second stab at the Ontario Sires Stakes on Friday evening, when the top three-year-old pacing fillies in the province gather at Mohawk
Racetrack for a pair of $40,000 Gold eliminations.
In her first provincial appearance, My Red High Heels finished seventh in an event where only the Gold final was contested. This week the daughter of Modern Art will be looking to improve on that effort in order to secure a few more points toward a berth in the season ending Super Final.
"Hopefully we get into the Super Final," said owner Cesar Kowalski of Stoney Creek, Ont. "We’ll see what happens Friday. She should be good."
My Red High Heels will start from Post 2 in the second $40,000 Gold elim and will face off against a tough field which includes former Gold final winners Shacked Up from Post 3 and Yellow Diamond from Post 5. Competing against the province’s best outside of Gold Series action, My Red High Heels has been a regular face in the top five, and Kowalski is hoping she can maintain that trend through this week’s elimination round, which will see the top five finishers from each split advance to next week’s $130,000 Gold final.
"She’s held her own, anyway," noted the longtime owner. "She’s a big filly. She can go to the front, or she can go from behind. She’s the type, when a horse gets beside her, she digs right in."
Kowalski acquired My Red High Heels in mid May and has watched the filly earn four wins, four seconds, two thirds and $117,087 since then. Under the tutelage of trainer Dave Tyrrell of Port Perry, Ont., My Red High Heels captured the second leg and the final of the Town Pro Pacing Series; finished second in her Canadian Breeders Championship elim and fourth in the final; and finished fourth in the Standardbred Breeders of Ontario Association Stakes, all at Mohawk.
"She’s been pretty good," said Kowalski, who followed up on Tyrrell’s recommendation to look at My Red High Heels while she was racing in the Ontario Spring Series in late April. "We kind of got lucky with her.
"Dave Tyrrell’s done a great job with her," added the owner. "He’s an easy-going guy, a straight-up guy."
My Red High Heels heads into Friday’s Gold elim battle off a pair of overnights at Mohawk. The filly and reinsman Randy Waples logged third-place finishes in both events, and Kowalski hopes those efforts will set her up for success in the last Gold event of the season.
The first Gold elim features the return of last year’s division champion St Lads Popcorn, who has been absent from the racing scene since July 11. Regular reinsman Jason Brewer will steer the Twin B Champ trainee from Post 4 in the first split for owner and trainer Jack Darling of Cambridge, Ont.
Ontario’s talented three-year-old pacing fillies kick off Mohawk Racetrack’s Friday evening program at 7:30 p.m. and will battle for a Gold final berth in Races 1 and 2.
