Georgetown Downs Proposed
Four investors from Delaware and Pennsylvania are looking to breathe life into the former Georgetown Raceway in Delaware. An article by delmarvanow.com states that the new half-mile Georgetown Downs would replace the aged facility
with a 15,000-square-foot sports bar and clubhouse.
"In my view, it's unlikely the General Assembly will allow for multiple venues in Sussex County," the developers' attorney, Glenn Mandalas, was quoted as saying in the report.
Mandalas' comments are referring to the fact that a pair of other gambling facilities was proposed for Sussex County last year. The attorney states in the article that he believes his clients' proposal has an advantage over the others, as Georgetown Downs would be located off a major artery -- just off Route 9, which is close to an airport. Mandalas also conveyed that his clients proposed venture could see horses racing at the track sooner than with the other proposals.
Hugh Gallagher, executive director of the Delaware Harness Racing Commission, states in the article that there is a hitch in terms of how fast the proposed facility could technically host the live races. Gallagher is quoted as confirming that the earliest the track would be able to host live racing is 2011.
