Jackpot Hi-5 Carryover Hits $500,000
As a mandatory Jackpot Hi-5 payout nears for the popular wager at Woodbine Mohawk Park, the carryover pool hit the $500,000 mark on Friday night (March 22).
Making her debut for the connections of owner Kelly Waxman and trainer Bill Budd, the four-year-old Dali mare Sunday Afternoon and driver Doug McNair rebuffed a mid-race challenge from Big Lis then held off the late-closing Docs Sausalito and favourite Reis Star Cross to post an 11-1 upset in the evening's final 11th race, winning by half a length in 1:55.3. Naughty Lady B and Miss Mady completed the top five finish order and the 2-9-1-3-4 winning combination for the Jackpot Hi-5 wager, which paid $5,790.30 for a $1 ticket.
With multiple winning wagers, the carryover climbed to $507,079.88 heading into tomorrow night's final race. That will mark the final opportunity for horseplayers to take down the Jackpot before wagering is suspended until a mandatory payout will be in effect on Saturday, March 30.
The Jackpot Hi-5 requires horseplayers to select the top five finishers in order and features a 20-cent minimum wager with a 15 per cent takeout. The wager is offered nightly on the final race of each card.
Earlier on the card, Auciello Stables' O'Brien Award-winning mare Exhilarated earned her first seasonal victory with a 4-3/4 length romp in 1:55.2 in a $12,000 fillies and mares class. Jonathan Drury drove the eight-year-old Mach Three mare, favoured at 4-5, for trainer Carmen Auciello.
