Brocks Fortune Prevails; Nixon Triples
Brocks Fortune turned a perfect, pocket trip into a narrow triumph in Monday’s $8,500 Preferred 3 for horse and gelding pacers at The Raceway at Western Fair District, and trainer Dean Nixon celebrated a hat trick performance with performers from his outfit.
Colin Kelly mapped out the sweet trip for Brocks Fortune, who watched Littlebitaswagger cut out an opening quarter clocked in :30. He was still the leader through middle splits of 1:00.1 and 1:29.1, but he was feeling first-over pressure from Tomitta Bayama. Kelly found clearance in the lane with Brocks Fortune, who kicked home in :29.3 to win by a half-length margin over Tomitta Bayama in 1:59.1. Shifty Norm came on late to finish third.
Taylor Fritz of Guelph, Ont. owns and trains the nine-year-old son of Stonebridge Regal-Fannies Fortune. The veteran now owns a 2-0-1 record from five starts this year. The 27-time winner has banked over $375,000 to date.
Dean Nixon nabbed a training triple on the 10-race card, and he won those three races in succession thanks to solid efforts from Candid Cameron (1:57.1 – Race 4), Backyard Swagger (1:57 – Race 5) and Its A Big Secret (1:58 – Race 6).
Nixon bumped this year’s win total to 10 from 83 starts while pushing his lifetime win total to 811. His starters have stashed away well over $100,000 this year and more than $6.3 million to date.
