Brodys Scrapper Scrapes Flamboro Win
Putting a head in front of pacesetter and race-favourite Pretty Handsome at the head of the stretch, Brodys Scrapper eked victory in the $11,500 Preferred 2 Pace at Flamboro Downs on Sunday, Jan. 27.
Driver Travis Cullen sat the Rachel Andrew trainee into fourth from post eight as Pretty Handsome led pocket-sitter Lincolnjames to a :28.1 opening quarter. Cullen then kicked off the rail and journeyed Brodys Scrapper first over into a :58.3 half before advancing to the front as the tempo quickened to a 1:26.4 third quarter.
Brodys Scrapper led Pretty Handsome narrowly into the lane before edging clear of the fading pacesetter nearing the wire. Lincolnjames pulled pocket and rallied to take second by a head while Pretty Handsome held third.
An eight-year-old gelding by Mach Three, Brodys Scrapper won his 22nd race from 110 starts overall, earning $134,551. Cullen and Andrews co-own the $7.10 winner.
Toot Toot N, owned by driver Ed Hensley and trainer Ashleigh Hensley, wired his competition in the $8,500 Preferred 3 Pace. The eight-year-old Gotta Go Cullen gelding took control from the rail and led unchallenged to a :27.4 quarter and :57.4 half. Favourite About A Boy, from sixth, tipped first over heading to the half and applied minor pressure to Toot Toot N passing three-quarters in 1:27. However About A Boy only gave pursuit through the stretch as he finished one-and-three-quarter lengths off Toot Toot N in the 1:56 mile. Tero, from second over, took third.
Winning his 19th race from 86 starts overall, Toot Toot N has earned $124,935. He paid $4.30 to win.
