Tilikum Sparks Tote At Flamboro
Starting from the rail, 33-1 shot Tilikum inherited control and faced little pressure to upset the $8,500 Fillies and Mares Preferred 3 at Flamboro Downs on Saturday, Jan. 12.
Passing the first quarter in :28.3, Tilikum set a slow tempo which prompted Machs Echo to edge first over from fifth moving to a :58.2 half. Machs Echo proceeded to stall wide of pocket-sitter Southwind Ion heading to the backstretch while Tilikum maintained a length-and-a-half lead through a 1:27 third quarter. The Tiffanee Staley trainee spun into the stretch as Machs Echo retreated and crossed the wire in 1:56.2 one-and-a-quarter lengths better than Southwind Ion. War Filly, tracking the top two from the rail, took third.
Returning $68.50 to win, Tilikum won her 20th race from 103 starts, earning $127,899. Staley also co-owns the seven-year-old Jeremes Jet mare with driver Denis St. Pierre.
