Willyorwonthe Says He Will

After an uncharacteristically dull performance last time out, Willyorwonthe capped his best season with a strong effort in the featured $11,500 Preferred 2 Handicapped Trot on Thursday (December 27) at Flamboro Downs.

A field of six solid square-gaiters was effectively reduced to four early by virtue of early breaks from Streamsong and favourite Lady Caterina. Driver Alfie Carroll settled 'Willy' into third as Warrawee Shipshape (Robert Shepherd) fronted the field a four through a :28.2 opening quarter and :58.2 half. Carroll swung Willyorwonthe from third to start first-over pressure at the five-eighths point, advancing to just a half-length back of the tempo-setter as the third quarter was reached in 1:28.3.

Willyorwonthe cleared heading into the final turn, with Absolut Seelster (Scott Young) looming the danger after following that cover around the early leader to be situated first-over. The question as to whether Willyorwonthe would or not wasn't much of a head-scratcher as the trotter widened his lead from a length and a half at the head of the lane to a two-length margin at the wire, reached in 1:57.3. Absolut Seelster was another two lengths up on Warrawee Shipshape, who stayed for show.

A five-year-old homebred owned and trained by Bill Megens of Puslinch, Ont., Willyorwonthe (Angus Hall - Mikestory) made his 38th start of the year to complete a 9-7-5 season with $86,130 in earnings. Lifetime, Willyorwonthe has won 22 races and banked $219,640.
