Foiled Again Departs Canada A Winner
The legendary Foiled Again delivered a final memorable moment for Canadian racing fans with an impressive victory in the penultimate start of his career Saturday, Dec. 22 at Woodbine Mohawk Park.
The richest Standardbred of all time came first up from third at three-quarters to challenge leader Alexas Jackpot and stormed by in the lane to win by two-and-a-quarter lengths in 1:53.2 for driver Louis-Philippe Roy and trainer Ron Burke.
A large crowd turned out despite freezing temperatures to take a photo with Foiled Again during a pre-race meet and greet session. Fans rushed out to the apron and made plenty of noise cheering Foiled Again home and in the winner’s circle.
A winner of $7.6 million, Foiled Again now has 109 victories over the course of 13 seasons on the racetrack. The 14-year-old gelding has added $76,540 to his career earnings in his final season for owners Burke Racing Stable LLC, Weaver Bruscemi LLC and Jjk Stables LLC.
Mohawk Park holds a special place in the career of Foiled Again. The richest win of his illustrious career came in the $787,000 Canadian Pacing Derby on Sept. 1, 2012.
Foiled Again was making his last start on Canadian soil and the penultimate start of his career on Saturday at Woodbine Mohawk Park. The Burke trainee will make his final start on New Year’s Eve at The Meadows in Pennsylvania, the Burke's home base, before retirement.
A $2-win ticket on Foiled Again returned $3.70.
Roy drove four other winners on the program and Easy Lover Hanover won his fifth-straight when taking the $34,000 Preferred Pace. The full-card recap can be found here.

A win that looked so easy for
A win that looked so easy for Foiled Again at Woodbine-Mohawk Park. It's a shame he has to retire as do some other notable horses. There are a few who have not been racing for some time but then again had very solid, profitable racing years: St Pete Star (14), Balanchine (14), and Stormin Rustler who is currently in to go tomorrow at Freehold in NJ. I wish all of these fine horses a fitting retirement and to enjoy life off the track. Cheers to Foiled Again and these fine equine athletes.
He definitely deserves to be
He definitely deserves to be newsmaker of the year in Standardbred sports, and the owners as well deserve to be honoured.
I also would like to see the Obrien awards rename the older pacer of the year the Foiled Again trophy as he greatly has deserved that honour as there may be faster but never has there been a more determined, solid, consistent and with that iron tough heart and desire to win, which lasted for years. That is what the aged pacing ranks is all about: heart and toughness and most are lucky to do it for 1 to one and a half successful campaigns at most.
He will be greatly missed and so hard to ever find an equal too. We will find lots of speedsters to equal the speed greats, but for duration of a career, we will wait decades. At least 1 decade anyway, as that is how long this guy remained near the top of the charts.
Great watching this super
Great watching this super horse race one last time in Canada. He deserves a great retirement. Feel bad that we in Western Canada did not get a chance to see this equine star perform live.
Congrats to the great Foiled
Congrats to the great Foiled Again for another win.
Well deserving for horse of
Well deserving for horse of the year in Canada as well as the US. To the connections they need to be rewarded heavily for sportsmanship. This race weighed heavily on my heart and gave me chills at the end. Good job Foiled Again.
