Da Magician Sweeps Open Field
Away last of the quintet, Da Magician moved for the leader heading to three-quarters and edged to a head victory in the $12,000 Open Pace over a 'sloppy' track at Fraser Downs on Sunday, December 9.
The field lined in post-position order as Cool Cowboy led to a :28.4 opening quarter while Rod Therres positioned the Serge Masse owned and trained Dragon Again gelding six lengths from the front. With no motion towards the top through a :59.1 half, Therres tipped Da Magician first over approaching the backstretch.
Cool Cowboy continued on the lead as Da Magician advanced into second pacing past three-quarters in 1:28.1. The two battled through the stretch as pocket-sitter Illwinifican, along with the rest of the field, ranged closer to the battling pair nearing the wire while Da Magician overtook Cool Cowboy late in the lane to win. Illwinifican finished a neck off the winner in third.
Winning his 12th race in 21 starts this season and his 25th in 49 overall, Da Magician has accumulated $329,849 in earnings. He paid $3.60 to win.
