Sodwana Bay Best At Flamboro
Surging three wide into the final turn, Sodwana Bay barreled toward the lead and swept to a length-and-a-half victory over pacesetter Twice An Angel to take the $10,500 Fillies and Mares Preferred 2 Pace in the slop at Flamboro Downs on Saturday, Nov. 24.
Twice An Angel controlled the tempo through a :28.2 first quarter with Casino Classic second and Bourbon Seelster third. Bourbon Seelster soon edged off the cones by a :58.3 half while Sodwana Bay raced from fourth into the backstretch.
With Twice An Angel opening a three-and-a-half length lead on a stalled backfield, driver Nick Steward fanned Sodwana Bay toward the center of the course from fourth and launched a bid heading to a 1:27.3 third quarter. The Victor Puddy trainee drew within two-lengths of the lead turning for home before sliding by in the lane to win. Twice An Angel held second while fourth-place finisher The Joy Luck Club took third via disqualification of Casino Classic for interference.
A five-year-old mare by No Pan Intended, Sodwana Bay won her 15th race in 39 starts this season and her 21st in 77 overall, earning $151,787. The $17.00 winner competes for owners Wayne Mac Rae and Howmac Farms Ltd.
Dreamfair Eternity kicked off the Saturday card with a length-and-a-quarter win in 1:59 to take the $8,500 Fillies and Mares Preferred 3 Pace. The four-year-old mare by Somebeachsomewhere sat sixth as Outlaw Imahotvixen set the pace with a :29.4 first quarter.
Driver Collin Kelly tipped the Bill Budd trainee first over approaching a 1:00.3 half and progressed to within a length of the lead by three-quarters in 1:30. Dreamfair Eternity drew past Outlaw Imahotvixen through the stretch to win while Hp Sissy, from second over, finished third.
Owned by John Lamers, Dreamfair Eternity won her 10th race in 35 starts, earning $54,695. She paid $6.90 to win.
