Woodward Named 2018 Zoom Champ
The votes are in and the overall winner of this year’s Zoom Contest which featured five monthly themes and winners has been determined!
Congratulations to Jacie Woodward of Peterborough, Ont., who has been voted the 2018 Zoom Champion! Jacie’s shot is of Magnify Bliss aka ‘Wheels’, getting some love from her nine-year-old brother Joshua, in the paddock at Kawartha Downs. Woodward was also the winner in September’s Zoom contest which featured the theme, ‘Meet My Horse’, landing her a spot in the final poll along with the other monthly winners.
Jacie grew up around Standardbreds, learning the ins and outs of the industry from her father. “The first time I ever went out to jog a horse was when I was about two, I'd sit on my dad's lap. At 10 I was jogging horses by myself and by 14 I was warming horses up at Kawartha Downs.”
Her favourite track is Kawartha Downs because she grew up there and it feels like home, but during Kawartha’s off-season Jacie finds herself travelling from Peterborough to Flamboro Downs to help on race nights.
Trot Insider checked in with Jacie to see how ‘Wheels’ has been doing since Kawartha closed for the season.
“Magnify Bliss is doing very well, he's been racing at Flamboro where he's been racing great,” explained Woodward. “My dad and I have been very surprised and happy with him. He's just such a great horse to be around and to love. I can’t say he's not spoiled with my love and his treats.”
‘Wheels’ raced at Flamboro Downs for his first time this fall last Wednesday (October 17) and finished third. He's back in-to-go on October 24.
Six years ago, she had her first win as an owner with her chestnut gelding Hurricane King. “I dressed him [Hurricane King] in a pink harness, but recently my best memories have come from Magnify Bliss. He can be very consistent with placing in the top five, but the night he won at Kawartha I was a very happy and proud mama.”
Woodward is currently in grade 12 at Thomas A. Stewart Secondary School, and the 18-year-old athlete knows how to keep herself busy when she isn’t at the barn helping with the horses. “I play for my high school basketball and field lacrosse teams. I also play for our Peterborough Thunder Under 19 rep softball team.”
Jacie has won a $50 gift card to the racetrack of her choice and a framed enlargement of her winning photo!
