Upsetters Prevail In Alberta Starburst
A set of $25,200 divisions of the Alberta Starburst for two-year-old pacing fillies went postward Friday evening at Northlands Park, and it didn’t prove to be a great night for the favourites.
It was a mild surprised in the first division thanks to Western Summit pulling off the 7-1 upset for trainer Keith Clark and driver Nathan Sobey.
The daughter of Vertical Horizon-Kismet Killean shot to the top from Post 7 and never looked back. She led through intervals of :29.3, 1:01 and 1:30.3 before finishing off the competition with a final quarter clocked in :31.1. She won by 1-1/4 lengths over the odds-on favourite, Raging Chihuahua. Taking home third prize was Casey N Grinegan. The time for the mile was 2:01.4.
Keith Clark shares ownership on the youngster with Robert Jones, Doris McDougall and John Hind. From seven trips postward she’s managed to put together a 2-1-2 record and bankroll that stands at $22,102.
Lollipop Yacht took advantage of a ground-saving trip for trainer/driver Kelly Hoerdt in the second division. She was never worse than mid-pack through fractions of :28.3, 1:00.2 and 1:30.1, and when she shook loose in the lane she kicked home to win by 1-3/4 lengths over Jedi Tricks in 2:01.4. Recovering from an early miscue to be third was the odds-on choice, Gin Twist.
Sent off at odds of 14-1, the rookie daughter of Riverboat King-Mrs Red Pop broke her maiden in what proved to be her fifth lifetime start. Hoerdt shares ownership on the pacing lass with Blair Corbeil, William Andrew and Fred Gilbert. She owns a 1-1-0 record from five starts plus a career bankroll that stands at just over $17,000.
