Royal Witch's Mohawk Main Event Romp
It was a classic case of ‘drop and pop’ for Royal Witch on Monday evening, as the speedy trotting mare dusted a solid group of conditioned foes at Woodbine Mohawk Park.
Well beaten when facing Preferred foes in her previous outings, Royal Witch stepped down the class ladder for trainer Ben Baillargeon and came away with an eye-catching score in a snappy clocking of 1:52.3.
Trevor Henry got away fourth with the mare while stablemate R First Class shot to the lead and had the field chasing him past the quarter pole in :27. Il Sogno Dream was chased along to make the lead in the backstretch, and he quickly came under pressure when Henry started up the engine on Royal Witch. She swept up on the rim and eventually took command after racing parked at the mid-way point in :55.4. She cruised by the three-quarter marker in 1:23.4 before slipping home in :28.4 to win by three lengths over odds-on favourite, On A Sunny Day, in 1:52.3. Third prize went to a hard-charging Try Try Again.
Tom and Elizabeth Rankin of St. Catharines, Ont. own the four-year-old daughter of Kadabra-Royal Tennis. The victory was her seventh of the season – and the 10th to date – for the career winner of $207,793.
