Bartlett Doubles Up In Open Action
Jason Bartlett drove Dr Nabrinsky and Four Starz Horndog to wins in the Open I Handicap Pace and Open II Pace for fillies and mares Wednesday at Mohegan Sun at Pocono Downs
.
In the Open I Handicap Pace for the gals, Bartlett left from the one hole in the five-horse field following the scratch of race favourite Nip N Attack and sat third for the first half-mile of the race. Ireneonthemove (Greg Grismore) and Riley Rose (Sean Bier) battled early on from the five and six posts, respectively, before Ireneonthemove took the field to the opening split in :27.2 with Riley Rose on the outside.
Bier had to work hard to grab the lead from Ireneonthemove and was the new leader at the half that was clocked in :55.4. It was down the back stretch when Bartlett came first up and went after Riley Rose, who got to the three-quarter pole in 1:24.
Dr Nabrinsky won by three-quarters of a length over Ireneonthemove with a winning stretch drive. Third went to Diva Delight (Andrew McCarthy).
Al Pellegrini trains Dr Nabrinsky, a winner for the fifth time in 32 starts in 2009.
Four Starz Horndog, trained by Carmine Fusco, also won from the one post in the Open II Pace with Bartlett driving. Bartlett, in this race, sat second throughout the three-quarters of the race with Up Front Bethann (Ryan Anderson) showing the way at the opening panel, timed in :28 before race favourite Circles Dragonlady (Jim Morrill Jr.) became the new leader at the half and three-quarter marks with times of :56.2 and 1:25, respectively.
Bartlett took Four Starz Horndog to the Pocono Pike (passing lane) to nip Circles Dragonlady by a nose. Up Front Bethann finished third in this race.
Time of the mile was 1:52.4, a season mark for Four Starz Horndog.
Bartlett had a total of six wins on the 15-race program Wednesday evening at the Northeastern Pennsylvania five-eighths mile oval.
