High Profile Colt Romps
Just four dashes faced the gate for the Tuesday morning (Aug. 28) qualifying session at Woodbine Mohawk Park. One of the charges that tasted victory during the session was a two-year-old colt out of the great Cabrini Hanover, the dam of 2015 O’Brien Award winner Solar Sister.
The colt in question, Perkins, by Sportswriter, lined up in Post 7 for Race 4. He has yet to finish on the board after three pari-mutuel starts, two of which he put in breaks.
Although his Tuesday morning effort didn’t result in any purse earnings, Perkins’ connections must have been pleased, as the bay was a more-than-convincing winner – almost 25 lengths the best.
The homebred of David Willmot (of King City, Ont.) and Clay Horner (Toronto, Ont.) fired off the gate and was the first down to the quarter pole for driver Jody Jamieson in :29.3. After having been more than two lengths the best at the first call, the Gregg McNair trainee increased his lead to four by the time he clicked off the opening half in :58.
Perkins opened more daylight between himself and his rivals on the turn, as he had expanded his lead to more than eight lengths by the time he paced past the third call in 1:25.4.
The lead was more than 12 lengths at the head of the stretch, but that’s when Perkins decided that wasn’t even close to enough.
When all was said and done, Perkins had tacked another 12 lengths between he and his closest rival. Perkins’ margin of victory was 24 and three-quarter lengths. The win time was 1:54.2.
Perkins is the eighth foal out of Cabrini Hanover p,2,1:51s ($1,473,729), whose top offspring to date is Solar Sister, who won 14 of 49 races, $1.17 million in purses and took a mark of 1:49.4 as a four-year-old.
